This year's Scholarship/Teacher Grant Night features a presentation by Kathy Pollock of Cedarburg High School (CHS). Kathy has taught Chemistry, AP Chemistry and Organic Chemistry since starting her career at CHS in 1997. After completing the ASM Year 1 Teacher Workshop at Michigan Technological University and the ASM Year 2 Teacher workshop at The Ohio State University, Kathy implemented a semester-long Materials Science course at CHS. She recently completed the special topics ASM Teacher Workshop at Northwestern University. Kathy received her B.S. in Chemistry from Michigan Technological University and her M.S. in Inorganic Chemistry from UW-Madison. She received the 2007 Wisconsin Siemens Foundation AP Science Teacher award.
While rarely found at the high school level, the implementation of a Materials Science course at the 9-12 level offers numerous opportunities for developing students' interest in the materials found in their everyday lives. The presentation will provide an overview of the topics and lab activities in a high school Materials Science course, the teacher training that is available through the ASM Foundation, and the unique experiences associated with this type of course. The challenges and limitations of teaching Materials Science in a high school setting will also be discussed.
