Environmental regulations, namely stricter emission standards, are pushing the small engine business to a new level in manufacturing. Currently, Briggs and Stratton is operating at the third reduction level emission standards for small engines, but is making the move to the fourth level, which requires an additional 80% emission reduction. This move will involve nearly every aspect of engine design and manufacturing and mirror the steps automakers took in the 1970s-1990s. This will lead to lighter, smaller, and more fuel efficient engines than in the past or even what is available today.

Ms. Carol Deming is the Metallurgical Engineer for Briggs and Stratton's Advanced Materials and Manufacturing group. She is a 2012 graduate of Michigan Technological University and is currently pursuing her M.S. degree in Materials Engineering from UW-Milwaukee. She supports Briggs and Stratton production and engineering areas for metal development, quality, and specifications. She also leads Briggs and Stratton's Materials Lab activities.

Online registration ends Friday, February 8.
